I have created a small action based on the Page Curl Tutorial. The action simply creates a page curl in any of the four corners of an image.

Here are a couple of examples.

Page curl action first example

Page curl action second example

I have added a drop shadow style to the action, however the values I used are for very large images so at the end of the action you may need to adjust the drop shadow style.

One more thing is that when you run the action you may get a message saying “The object Background is not currently available” just hit continue. That happens because the first step of the action is to unlock the layer, however if the layer is not locked you get that message.

You can download the action here Page Curl Action
To install it just unzip the contents of the .zip file in your Photoshop actions folder.
Choose which of the four included actions (top left, top right, bottom left, bottom right) you want to run and just hit play.

This action was created with Photoshop CS2 but should also be compatible with Photoshop CS as well but not with previous Photoshop versions.

For those of you that don’t already know PanosFX’s website, it’s a site that offers some of the best photoshop actions that you can find for free. Some of the free actions include a 35mm filmstrip effect, a puzzle effect and various other effects.
Panos has recently released a new action that:

will make your photos look as if they were painted long ago on a wall; time has left its marks on the wall’s surface making it look cracked. Part of the painting has been peeled off

Below you can see an example of what this action does.

Photoshop actions are great time savers, they can help you automate repetitive tasks and batch process images. However, actions can be used as a learning tool as well. If you have found an action that produces a result you like and you are wondering about the technique used, there is a simple way of finding out the details of all the steps involved.

Photoshop actions are text files and as a result they can be saved as text files. The process of saving an action as a text file is quite simple, hold down the Ctrl+Alt keys (Command+Option for Mac) , go to the actions menu by clicking on the little arrow at the top right corner of the actions palette and select save actions. A window will come up asking you to give the text file a name, name it something you will remember and save it. Now you practically have a tutorial of how to reproduce the effect the action produces. No screenshots of course :) .

Just one thing to keep in mind is that the text file will contain all the actions that are loaded in the actions palette. So, it is better to have only the action (or actions) that you are interested in, loaded in your actions palette.

I have created a small simple Photoshop action for sharpening images. This action uses the high pass sharpening technique which I believe is better than using unsharp mask. Within the action set I have included three small variations of the action, the only difference between them is the blending mode applied (Overlay, Soft light and Hard light). To use this action download the zip file below and extract the .atn file at your actions folder which by default is C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop X\Presets\Photoshop Actions (replace the X with the photoshop version you are using). Load them at your actions palette, open the image you want to sharpen and just hit play.
