Brusheezy is a new site offering large collection of free photoshop brushes. Currently there are a total of 148 free brush sets under 15 categories such as abstract, nature, space, splatters etc. What I like about the site is that users can comment on the brushes and contribute their own brush sets. There is also a patterns section at the site however it currently has only 6 patterns for download. Nonetheless it is a very useful resource for all Photoshop users.

Posting about this site reminds me that its about time to update my Free Photoshop Brushes resources page.

Photoshop brushes can give a really nice touch to your Photoshop designs. From one comment left at one of my previous posts about Photoshop Brushes I found this new site that is a directory of available brushes for download from various artists. I have added it to the list but since the post is quite old I thought of blogging about it as well. The site is GetBrushes. It has a nice categorisation of the brush sets and each brush has a description and details information which makes the database easily searchable. Each brush set has a screenshot, which is nice and you can also rate the brushes, a feature that if used wisely will be very useful for people looking for good brush sets. If I find some time, I am planning to create a couple of brush sets to contribute. In the meantime visit GetBrushes

Graphic.com Has a nice article explaining three ways that you can use to reduce the noise from digital images. Anyone that has ever been involved with stock photography knows how hard this is. The three ways that Graphic.com describes work (I usually use the first one) but I thought that I should mention a photoshop plugin that does exactly that reduce the digital noise. There ae several plugins of course but this one is free. It’s the DeNoise plugin.

Another free option is a standalone application, the Noiseware Community Edition (scroll to the bottom of the page). Although it has the disadvantage that it is a stand alone application it is really easy to use and provides quite good results.

My favorite of all the brushes sets that Ningengirai offers is by far the Decadent Boxes brush set. It’s really small (just four brushes included) but they are really nice. Along with the brush sets Ningengirai offers for download the image packs from which he created those brushes.

Below is an example from the Decadent Boxes brush set.

You can find the brushes here.

Also check out the rest of the site as well, they offer some more goodies for download like textures and Photoshop gradients.

Twisting Pixels are offering a new free Photoshop plugin called PixelSampler. This new plugin has 7 seperate filters which are:

Developer descriptions:

DuoTone: create precise tones composing of two color choices. Use brushes to paint away parts you don’t want on your image.

MonoTone: a wonderful way to make a monochromatic print out of a single color.

Black and White: Our technology automatically uses a green and yellow filtering system, which cuts down the transmission of blue light, making skies appear darker and clouds stand out more. Orange and red filters are used to lighten tones and darken those of other colors, which produce dramatically darkened skies.

Contrasting Levels: Caputres details lost in the shadows. It also reduces the brightness range of an excessively contrast image, by subduing bright areas of sky, water, snow, and sand which bring the light back to a normal range.

Grain: will give your image the look of exposed and processed silver halides left behind on film emulsion. Use this effect to give your image the unique grain shapes that align better than conventional ones

Warm Cool: Use this on color images to give either a cooling or a warming effect. Cooling filters are pale blue and will warm a pale straw color. Warming will prevent a cold feel to pictures taken on overcast days or in shady areas on sunny days.

StarLight: add flare to your art. This feature will render brilliant points of light from your image highlights.

I haven’t played with the filter enough but so far it looks like a really nice filter and you can’t beat the price (I will post examples later on). You can downlod it and view some examples of the effects PixelSampler can create at the Website of Twisting Pixels.

I have created a small action based on the Page Curl Tutorial. The action simply creates a page curl in any of the four corners of an image.

Here are a couple of examples.

Page curl action first example

Page curl action second example

I have added a drop shadow style to the action, however the values I used are for very large images so at the end of the action you may need to adjust the drop shadow style.

One more thing is that when you run the action you may get a message saying “The object Background is not currently available” just hit continue. That happens because the first step of the action is to unlock the layer, however if the layer is not locked you get that message.

You can download the action here Page Curl Action
To install it just unzip the contents of the .zip file in your Photoshop actions folder.
Choose which of the four included actions (top left, top right, bottom left, bottom right) you want to run and just hit play.

This action was created with Photoshop CS2 but should also be compatible with Photoshop CS as well but not with previous Photoshop versions.
