Graphic.com Has a nice article explaining three ways that you can use to reduce the noise from digital images. Anyone that has ever been involved with stock photography knows how hard this is. The main reason is that if you overdo it you introduce artifacts in the image which are even worse than noise imho.
The three ways that Graphic.com describes work (I usually use the first one) but I thought that I should mention a photoshop plugin that does exactly that reduce the digital noise. There ae several plugins of course but this one is free. It’s the DeNoise plugin.

Another free option is a standalone application, the Noiseware Community Edition (scroll to the bottom of the page). Although it has the disadvantage that it is a stand alone application it is really easy to use and provides quite good results.

transform rectangle
transform rectangle
transform rectangle

Now you should have a shape like the one below.

logo's body

This is the base or body of our imaginary character who is exercising. Now we want to add hands, legs and a head to our character. To add the head select the Ellipse Tool from Auto Shapes and draw a circle above the body of our character. Slightly rotate the circle to have a moving look.

logo's body and head

Select Ellipse Tool again to draw the hands. Duplicate and rotate it and place it as shown in the screenshot below.

logo's body and head and arms

Again with the help of Ellipse tool, draw and place the a new ellipse just over the head of our character.

logo's body and head and arms

Now the only thing that is missing is the legs. We will again use the Ellipse tool to draw the legs. Select the Ellipse tool and draw an ellipse just below the body portion of our character.

logo's body and head legs and arms

Duplicate this shape by pressing Ctrl+J together. Now rotate it and reduce its size. Place this layer as shown in the screenshot below.

logo's body and head legs and arms

Group, merge and duplicate these 2 layers. Rotate the new layer and place it as shown in the screenshot.

logo's body and head legs and arms

Our character is ready. Group and merge all layers. Now, we will add an orb to this shape. For that select Ellipse Tool to draw a circle over our character.

ellipse over our character

Press shift+ctrl+{ to send it back. Now control click on its layer name to select it and move the selection upwards.

ellipse over our character

Press Alt+ctrl+shift together and click on its layer name to select the remaining portion of the ellipse.

ellipse over our character and selection

Keep the selection active and press shift+ctrl+n to create a new layer. Select light gray as foreground and white as background color. Fill the selection with the Gradient Tool. You should have something like in the screenshot below.

almost finished

Now we will add a white outline to our character. For that, right click on its layer name and select blending options. Under blending options, select stroke. Set the color to white for the stroke and set the stroke width around 4-5 pixels. Add some text and our logo is ready.

fitness logo

Of course if you like you can add colors or some effects to the logo but this tutorial illustrates mostly how you can use the simple shapes to create a nice looking logo.

With this tutorial I am going to show you how to design a simple web layout using Photoshop like the one bellow.

final result of web design tutorial

1. Let’s start by creating a new document. I created a document with a size of 1024*768.

create new document

2. Now fill the background with a dull color. I used #545964

3. The next step is to select the Rounded Rectangle Tool rounded rectangle tool and set the Radius to 40 pixels in order to draw the main body of our layout. (I like rounded corners and that is the reason I am using the Rounded Rectangle Tool, you can also use the Rectangle tool if you like). Draw a white rounded rectangle that is 700 pixels wide and has a height of 600 pixels. You can specify the width and height under the Rounded Rectangle Options

specify size

Place the Rounded Rectangle in the middle of your document and you should now have something like this.

main layout body

Now we are going to add a reflection to the rounded Rectangle that is so Web2.
4. Duplicate the Rounded Rectangle layer by pressing Ctrl+J (or Layer->Duplicate Layer)

5. Select the move tool move tool and drag the duplicate layer below the original

move duplicate layer below the original

7. Select the duplicate layer and add a Mask by clicking at this icon mask button at the bottom of the Layers Palette.

8. Now we are going to add a fade at the reflection. Make sure that the mask you have just added is selected and select the gradient tool gradient.
Draw a black to white Gradient like the arrow in the direction that the arrow in the screenshot below shows.

gradient direction

9. Finally reduce the opacity of the Duplicate layer to 15% and you should get something like this.

main body reflection final

Now we are going to create a short of a header.

10. Select the Line tool photoshop line tool and set the weight to 3 pixels. Draw a line like in the screenshot below. For this tutorial I drew a light grey line but you can choose whatever color you want depending on the color scheme you want to give your layout.

photoshop draw line

11. Add your Logo and your Slogan or your site’s name above the Line at the right corner. I just used a Photoshop shape as a logo and some random text.

add your logo and your text

12. Now we are going to add reflection to both the Logo and the Text.
Duplicate the layers (Ctrl+J)
Go to Edit->Transform->Flip Verical
Move the duplicate Layers below the original ones
Add a mask to both Layers (see step 7)
Draw a black to white gradient on the mask (see step 8 )

Now you should have something like this.

adding reflection to the logo and the text

What is missing is some kind of navigation. I am going to add the navigation at the side.

13. Select the Rounded Rectangle Tool again but this time set the radius at a much smaller value (5-10) the color you want your navigation buttons to have. I chose #c7c9ce

14. Select the Background layer. Now draw a rounded rectangle like the one shown in the screenshot below.

drawing the first button

Repeat this step to create as many buttons as you like, I created four.

adding four buttons to my layout

15. Select the Vertical Type Tool photoshop vertical type tool and add the text you want at your buttons.

add text to the buttons of your layout

16. The layout is almost ready, I just added a Latest News Column with the Rounded Rectangle Tool and some random text and here is my final result.

With this tutorial, I am going to show you how to achieve a page curl effect in just a few easy steps. This tutorial use the Warp filter so it’s for Photoshop CS2 only.

Let’s start by opening the photo you want to apply the effect to. I used this stock photo

Original photo for the photoshop tutorial

The first thing that we are going to is to unlock the background layer. To do this simply double click on the padlock icon besides your photo thumbnail in the layers palette.

unlock background layer

Now select the Rectangular Marquee Tool

and select a rectangular area in the corner that you want to apply the effect. In the screenshot below I have highlighted my selection.

rectangular selection at the left bottom corner

Now select the gradient tool and draw a black to white gradient in your selection. In this case I drew the gradient from the top right corner to the bottom left corner.

black to white diagonal gradient

Now deselect (Select->Deselect) or (Ctr+D)
Next go to Edit->Transform->Warp.
Drag the bottom left point towards the center like in the screenshot below.

With this tutorial I am going to show you how to add shadows with perspective to shapes, text and isolated objects. There are a lot of ways to achieve this, but this is in my opinion the easiest and fastest way (probably one step shorter than the second fastest :) )

For this tutorial I am going to use a shape that I created from a 3d render. You can see the shape below.

original photoshop custom shape

Let’s start by applying a Drop Shadow style to the shape layer. Go to Layer-> Layer Style -> Drop Shadow (or just double click on the layer at the layers palette) and use these settings.

drop shadow settings

Now right click on the little (f) besides the layer at the layer palette. I have circled it in the screenshot below.

layer styles symbol at the layers palette

From the pop-up menu select “Create Layer”

select the create layer option

A new layer will be created from the Shadow effect. Your layer palette should now look like this.

layer palette

Select this new “Shadow” layer and go to Edit-> Transform -> Skew and skew it somewhat like this.

skew layer to the left or to the right

Apply the transformation and to to Edit-> Transform -> Distort this time. Now you should bring the top horizontal line of the rectangle down.

distort the shadow layer

You may need to align a bit the shadow layer with your original layer and you are done. I applied a gradient to the background and here is my final result.
