Watch and Learn Photoshop has released another excellent tutorial. This time the tutorial shows how you can make a light bulb look like it’s illuminated. An effect that is quite common in concept stock photography. I am sure everyone has seen pictures of business men holding a lit light bulb. This tutorial explains how you can achieve this effect.

The great thing about text effects is that they’re usually very easy to reproduce. In this tutorial, trainer Geoff Riggs will show you how to make a steel text effect, and then he’ll show you how to save this effect so that it can easily be applied to other layers in the future.

Colorizing Black and White Photos

Many black and white images can be made much more interesting simply by adding a little color. In today’s tutorial, Geoff Riggs will show you how to paint color onto a black and white photo.

Painted Frames

In today’s video tutorial, Geoff Riggs will show you how to created a quick and easy frame for your photographs simply using the eraser tool.

Non-Destructive Dodging and Burning

The Dodge and Burn tools in Photoshop are great tools for lightening and darkening areas of your images. However, these tools are destructive to your original photograph and can only be reversed using your History panel. In this tutorial, Geoff Riggs will show you a more creative and effective way of achieving the same effects without affecting the image layer itself.

Series Preview – Creating a New Document

Today’s tip is an excerpt from the upcoming video series, “Introduction to Photoshop CS 2″ by trainer Geoff Riggs. In this video clip, you’ll learn some of the basic options available to you when creating a new document in Photoshop.

Have fun, and as I always say pay attention to the details and try to understand the meaning of each step. Learning to replicate a process is not useful unless you understand what each step does, why it is important and in what other case it can be used.

Three new short, free Photoshop Tutorials have been released by Watch and Learn Photoshop.
The first tutorial shows you how you can turn a photo into a Polaroid. In my opinion these tutorials are really nice, not because you learn a step by step method to create an effect but because you see techniques that you can use in various other cases. For example, for this tutorial you will see that the crop tool can be used not only to crop a photo but for increasing the canvas size as well. One of those small tips that can help you be more productive.

The second tutorial is about photo retouching, and to be more precise it shows how in a couple of easy steps you can smooth the skin of people. Again, a great example of how you can use a layer mask to reveal or to hide details.

Sometimes the camera does TOO good a job of capturing all the details, especially when it comes to skin. A close-up portrait can sometimes reveal tiny bumps and roughness that we might not want to see. In this video, you’ll learn a very effective technique for smoothing out your skin in Photoshop.

Smooth Skin Tutorial

Finally the third tutorial explains how you can add a cast shadow to text.

In today’s video tutorial, Geoff Riggs will teach you how to create an elongated shadow cast in front of a block of backlit text.

Cast Shadow Tutorial

Start typing your text. As an example I just typed Text

Press Ctrl and you should see a box with 8 “handles” around your text like in the screenshot below.

By holding Ctrl presses and dragging any of the “handles” you can quickly transform your text.

Here are some examples.

In the screenshot below you see the result of dragging the lower right handle to the right.

Keep in mind that if you continue typing after you have transformed your text the new text that you will type will look like the transformed text, for example in the second example any new text you type at that text layer will be upside down.
This tip should work for Adobe Photoshop CS and CS2.

I haven’t tried the way the describe but here is how I do it.

1. Apply your desired layer style
2. Right Click on the small “f” icon in that layer in the layers palette.
3. Choose “Create Layers”

And now you have different styles on different layers. Note that you can not create layers from all styles. For example you can’t create a layer from a Bevel and Emboss style.

Just one thing to keep in mind is that the text file will contain all the actions that are loaded in the actions palette. So, it is better to have only the action (or actions) that you are interested in, loaded in your actions palette.

Start be creating a new document with a transparent background and Zoom in at 1600%. The size of the document usually needs to be somewhere around 10*10 pixels.
Then select the pencil tool and set the diameter at 1 pixel. Finally draw your pattern and when you are done go to “Edit” -> “Define Pattern”.

Here are a few examples to help you understand the process of drawing a pattern. The format of the examples is Pattern Size – Pattern (zoomed in) – Example on a blue background. You should expirement by yourself and you will be amazed from how many nice different patterns you can create.
